Bully-Proofing Your Child: What Martial Arts Really Teaches
It's not about fighting. Here's how taekwondo helps kids prevent and handle bullying.
Parents sometimes worry that martial arts will make their child aggressive. The opposite is true: trained kids are the least likely to fight.
Confidence deters bullies
Bullies look for kids who seem like easy targets. A child who stands tall and makes eye contact is far less likely to be picked on.
Words first
We teach kids to use a strong voice, set boundaries ("Stop! Leave me alone!") and walk away. These skills resolve most situations.
Getting help
Students learn when and how to tell a trusted adult — and that it's a sign of strength, not weakness.
Physical skills as a last resort
If a child truly can't get away, they learn safe ways to protect themselves and escape — never to hurt someone first.
Never the bully
Self-control and respect are core values. Kids with real skill learn they never need to prove anything.
