The Taekwondo Belt System Explained: What Each Color Means
From white to black, here's what every belt represents and how long it takes to progress.
Belts mark a student's growth in skill and character. While systems vary by school, the meanings are rooted in tradition.
White
Purity and a beginner's mind — a fresh start.
Yellow
The earth where a seed takes root — the foundation of technique.
Green
The plant beginning to grow — skills develop.
Blue
The sky the plant reaches toward — training advances.
Red
Danger — the student has power and must learn control.
Black
Maturity and mastery of the basics. A black belt is not the end, but the true beginning.
How long does it take?
Most dedicated students reach black belt in roughly three to five years, training consistently.
